Is Byron Scott Worth 5.5 Million?

Chances are, if you’re reading this - you’re a Sacramento Kings fan. And if you’ve learned anything over the years, you’ve come to find out nothing every comes easy for the Kings.

So, let’s add the 2009 Sacramento Head Coaching search into that category as well.

It’s well known throughout the league that the Kings are interested in the New Orleans Hornets Head Coach, Byron Scott. It’s also well known the Hornets are having major financial struggles are and looking (and willing) to shed payroll - not only from their roster, but, their coaching staff.

While the Kings have yet to officially ask the Hornets for permission to speak with Scott, the Hornets have made one thing clear to the Kings. You hire Scott, you owe us 5.5 million dollars.

Scott still has one year remaining on his contract, with a total of 5.5 million due in salary, that the Hornets have zero intention of buying out or reducing from what I’ve been told by those close to the Hornets.

So the question begs - the Kings lost between a rumored 25-28 million dollars this year, and made cost cutting moves that only resulted in the net gain of thousands of dollars - but they’re willing to payout at least 5.5 million dollars just to hire Scott?

    Quite costly…

Looks like Coach Scott is going to have to take a paycut of a few million if he wants Sac, as bad as they want him.

Where did you get that tidbit from EZE? That they’re asking the Kings to pay Scott’s salary next year if they want him?

I sent out a few e-mails to some of the Hornets beat writers as well as a couple people with ties to the organization. They’re pretty confident that IF the Kings want to pay that 5.5 million, they’ll let Scott walk. But, if not - they’re not going to fire him.

They want the salary off the books, but, from everything I’ve heard…Scott isn’t going to resign (he wants his money)…and the Hornets aren’t willing to let him walk for free.

Make sense, but if the Kings offered to pay 3-4 million of his salary, wouldn’t that be better than all or nothing? Especially since you could hire a cheap, up n coming coach(Shaw/Thibodeau/Elie etc) for around a million a year. Methinks that would be amicable from both parties as they each save $$$ and get to go in the direction they desire.

Well, it seems like it’s going to come down to Scott himself. I can’t really see the Kings offering the full buyout - and even going half on it is still expensive since they’ll still have to pay him a salary on top of that.

I think in all honesty Scott’s going to have to eat his salary, if he wants out - which I can’t imagine the Hornets saying no to…

And he’ll just have to come to Sac on a new contract.

That seems the most likely, if the situation does advance.

I agree with that, Scott would have to bail out and take less from the Kings, would he? I have my doubts.

Yea - it really comes down to how bad he wants out of Nola or how much he’d like to coach the Kings.

I’d have to think, going off Byron’s resume, the Kings would be on the line for about 3 million a year, if not more…

So, he’d be coming to a young team and taking a 2 1/2 to 2 million dollar paycut.

    That’s a lot to ask.

Yeah, but he’s on the hot seat in NO already, and while he has CP3 and West, Peja is aging, Chandler is broken down, and the rest of the roster leaves a LOT to be desired.

He’d be coming into a situation with 2 20 year old pivots, Kevin Martin and a top 4 draft pick, along with some serious FA dollars either this summer or next.

Other than having CP3 which looks to be stagnating in NO, the Kings position looks to be a lot more promising IMO for the next 5 years. The Hornets are gonna struggle adding pieces for the next couple years as TC and Peja are hogging up 30 million of their cap space.

What can be done, if the various sources for increased energy production do not fully offset the decline in oil and gas production? ,
