Go Niners!

Yesterday on 95.7 The Game, (with John Lund and Roxy Bernstein), Roxy was describing his recipe for a Bloody Mary.

Bernstein: " . . . and use balls of pepper".

<Bernstein looks over at Lund, who is smiling>

Bernstein: Why are you smiling? Is it because I said "balls"? It is, isn't it. Really? You're like my five-year-old. She laughs everytime I say "butt".

Lund: <Embarrassed> You didn't have to out me on the air for laughing.

After 49ers took a 17-0 lead. Saints are gaining momentum

PackfanMatt_12

All that momentum the 49ers had is now gone

4 turnovers now from New Orleans. But they're within 3 and getting the ball back now.

It's just a weird situation because New Orleans has struggled and been inconsistent but at the same time, they have a chance here to tie or take the lead even before the half. But SF should be up by more. They haven't been too opportunistic. So, in terms of momentum, I don't even know which team has it right now but I'm leaning towards NO.

IowaSacKing93
01-14-2012, 03:15 PM
And Niners fumble it with 17 seconds left in the half. Now New Orleans can get in FG range or take a shot.

The 49ers may be in trouble. First Possesion by both teams will be a sign

Niners need to come out and score - too much conservative play from the Niners now.

Saints are daring the 49ers to run it and they aren't doing it

Saints just can't hold onto the ball
5 Turnovers
2 on ST's
3 gave SF the ball inside the 30

I have no idea what Harbaugh is doing. Alex Smith is his QB not Drew Brees. Give it to Gore!

PackfanMatt_12
01-14-2012, 03:57 PM
does Harbaugh want to win this game. Instead of giving it to Gore on a run play. He does a weird lateral that fails and a bad reverse

IowaSacKing93
01-14-2012, 04:09 PM
I'll just say this: I can't see New Orleans going quietly into the night. SF needs to built a 2-possession lead because late in the game Brees is gonna go on a passing frenzy. IMO

29 attempts through 3 quarters doesn't seem like that many more than usual. Gore has 10 carries. How many does he usually have? 20?

Did you guys see the guy who tried to kick 5 FGs during the NCG? If he made one, he would have won something. He had one minute. He hooked the first two left, then the last two right and short. He didn't even get the 5th one off. He probably could have at least kicked it 1 second late and they probably would have counted it.

These coaches use the playbooks to cover their mouths. It's like how pitchers cover their mouths when a catcher visits the mound. I guess they don't want to be lip-read.

25 or 30 I think. Definitely 40 or less. Sorry, I know that's a pretty big difference. I just know it wasn't way out there.

when they do take it away from their mouth they have players hold up towels to cover them. They have been even more self aware since Spy Gate

i can't even imagine trying to do that. If i were him though i just take 30 seconds for 2 kicks. Gives you more time to plan it

Seeing the guy miss made me appreciate how good the pros are at it. I'm sure he practiced too, so for him to miss each attempt left or right, was disappointing.

Ok, see you guys later. I'll finish reading this thread later.

I dont think Packers will kill either. If GB beats the NYG San Fran cant expect to force 5 turnovers and on top of that hold on to a 4 point victory. I hold a high respect for the 49ers, but at Lambeau i just dont know

So after I left, I hard the Saints TD and Alex Smith rush TD on the radio. Then I was able to watch the last two minutes and see the Saints TD (and their successful 2-point play), and then the Vernon Davis drive and then the TD too.

Can someone post a clip of all of this?

2. Can you answer my question on "8 in the box" in PackfanMatt_12, what were your keys to the NCG? (http://kingsforum.net/live/showthread.php?264-PackfanMatt_12-what-were-your-keys-to-the-NCG), post # 5?

3. Ted Robinson on the radio described the Smith Rush TD as a "Boot Cut" or "Boot Route". What is that? I mean, I guess I can imagine a pattern the shape of a boot, but I'd rather hear you or someone else explain that.

Eze

Bootleg, is the typical term - they might give it different terms by variation of play design.

It's essentially where a tight end (more likely a WR) goes in motion on a timed count, comes across as if he was going to run a slant route and crack blocks the defensive end unsuspectingly, giving the QB enough room to run behind the line of scrimmage towards either sideline.

If he doesn't have a blocker in front of him (as in he goes one way, the entire team goes the other), it's called a naked boot (or waggle or sweep).

It's called a bootleg because the QB attempts to hide the ball for a moment (and the team create a deception), just enough to get the defensive line and linebackers going the opposite way (along with movement from the other offensive players) - name comes from bootleggers, back in the day trying to "hide" their whiskey.

Scroll to the 3:23 part of the video - you'll see Kyle Williams (son of White Sox GM Kenny Williams, odd, lol) come from the top of your screen as if he's going to run the slant and crack Will Allen (#91) I believe, the right tackle as Smith avoids him.

Actually, you can see the crack block better after they show the full play, as they replay it from a different angle. Little Kyle Williams ripped Allen a new one. lol

So Joe Staley (#74) blocking in front of him means it wasn't a naked boot, right?

Yeah, I've been using the replay at 3:38.

From the starting position (3:38 replay), I see:

One player in the top left, Kyle Williams (#10) in the lower left, Staley (#74), #71, #11 (Alex Smith), #59, #62, #78, #83, #21 (Frank Gore). Hey, that's only 10 players.

I'm still not seeing where the "hiding" is. It seems like Smith runs left right away.

Ok, I'm reading your 2nd paragraph one more time. Kyle Williams tackling one of the defensive ends on the left side is what opened things up. Normally Williams would be running through the middle to get open?

Smith really didn't do much to try and "hide" it, in this particular instance. A lot of times what will happen is the QB will act as if he's going to pitch the ball back to the running back, hold onto it against his body as he's turned away from the defense and the running back will act like he got a pitch while the QB will continue to run the opposite way (which they do many times to "get out of the play"). When the entire offensive line goes the same direction as the running back and the QB the opposite direction without much if any blocking, that's the naked boot, per say.

It's nit-picking really when it comes down to it - and each team has their own variations of what they define a sweep or a boot. But given the blocking Smith had, I wouldn't call it a naked boot like some did.

And yeah, the play was set up to make it appear as if Williams was going to run a route across the field (probably a slant, forcing the linebacker or safety to start towards the opposite side of the field as Smith went the other way).
