Ok, here is the schedule for the 'First Four' (technically, the 1st round, 4 games in 2 nights).
If I remember correctly, this is the same setup as last year.
Also, VCU was in the 'First Four' last year, beating USC in a low scoring game, and advancing to the Final Four ultimately.
Tuesday Night
6:40 PM ET, 5:40 CT, 3:40 PT on TRU TV (ouch! most of you will probably be at work, no sweat though, just a pair of 16 seeds): #16 Western Kentucky VS #16 Mississippi Valley State (21-12). (WKU somehow managed to win the conference tourney with a 15-18 record, this is also the same team that upset Drake in 2008 on a 3-point buzzer beater. This was my 2nd worst college hoops memory of all time.
Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29en3xAg9W0
:(
And #1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQH2UvnHLTE
The beginning of that video shows nuraman00's favorite college coach, Steve Alfraud.
Predictions: WKU has the bad record, MS Valley State has a 17-1 conference record in one of the worst in the country. So really a toss-up here. Plus, it's a late afternoon game on a Tuesday, most people won't be watching and if they are, they probably don't have a clue about either team, including myself.
2nd game: 9:10 PM ET, 8:10 CT, 6:10 PT on TRU TV: #14 Iona (25-7) vs #14 BYU (25-8).
Predictions: This should be a good game. Iona actually received an at-large bid coming out of a lower conference (unheard of 10 years ago). But BYU is a dangerous team, even without Jimmer. Brandon Davies is back this year and they have other good shooters as usual. Iona lost their first game of the season to 1 point against Purdue (a 10 seed in the tourney). They beat: Maryland, Western Michigan, St. Joseph's, Richmond (sweet 16 last year), and Nevada. Very impressive OOC. Both teams love to run and gun. Should be a good game in the 70s or 80s I hope. Btw, their 83.3 PPG is 1st in the nation.
Wednesday Night
6:40 PM ET, 5:40 CT, 3:40 PT on TRU TV: #16 Vermont (23-11) vs #16 Lamar (23-11).
Predictions: Nuraman00, I can't remember for sure, but I think we had a random conversation about Lamar sometime last month. They were the team that scored 120+ points in a few games this year. Vermont has the edge here because they come from a slightly better conference, and had a better conference record too. They've also been a good mid-major going back to about 2004 or 2005. But, on a neutral court, with high pressure on these kids who aren't used to it, anything can happen. Toss-up.
9:10 PM ET, 8:10 CT, 6:10 PT on (you guessed it) TRU TV: #12 South Florida (20-13) vs #12 Cal (24-9).
Another tough game to pick. Cal disappointed this year, they didn't do anything special during OOC, and the Pac-12 was really, really down this year. They played well during conference but again, that doesn't prove a ton. Jorge Gutierrez is a fun PG to watch. SFLA went 12-6 in the Big East but still didn't get any respect. They also pounded Villanova in the Big East tourney. SFLA wins a close game.
Ok, that's the First Four. Thursday is the first true day of the tourney. I'll try to post stuff Wednesday night, hope others join, and let the Madness begin baby!

Good post, IowaSacKing93 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?9-IowaSacKing93). I enjoy these kinds of previews, whether its from you, PackfanMatt_12 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?7-PackfanMatt_12), etc.
Good job giving the background of each team in each matchup too, with some relevant results that they've had this season.
And you included video clips too.
I liked VCU last year, was rooting for them after seeing them in the First Four.
The new seeding is still a little weird. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a play in between a #16, #15, #14, and #13?
And two of these play-ins occur in the same "Region" too.
Too bad there's no games today, as I have time today to watch. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
And yes, I will have time today to fill out my bracket.

Yeah, the 'First Four' is a little weird. Two of the games feature 16 seeds (teams that play in sucky conferences, won their conference tourney, but are still looked upon as the weakest teams in the tourney).
The other two games feature the last four teams that made it in (as at-large teams). So, essentially, Iona, BYU, SFLA, and Cal were the last four in.
I don't like this set up because you shouldn't necessarily punish every 16 seed by making them play an extra game (although this was the case even before the 'First Four', there was one play-in game Tuesday night between two 16 seeds). But, let's be honest, a 16 has never beaten a 1, so these teams are just playing to get run over by a national power. Still, I remember a few years ago #1 Uconn (later lost to George Mason in the elite 8) and they were playing a tight game with some 16 seed, and then finally ran away with about 5 minutes left in the game. So, there's always that hope, and that's what the tourney is all about. If two 11 seeds can make the final four in a 5 year span, then I think a 16 could beat a 1 one of these years.
I think this is just temporary. In 2-3 years, I believe the tourney will expand to 96, so I don't think we should too critical of the 1st round format. Another thing: They shouldn't call it the first round. The 1st and 2nd rounds have always been known as the rounds of 64 and 32. the First Four should be called just that.

Also, I don't know if you were aware nuraman, but before last year, CBS was the only network to broadcast these games. Typically there are 4 games within a 2-3 hour period (and depending on which market you're in, you get one of those 4 games). During commercials or halftime or if it was a blow out, they would switch you to other games. Even if the game was good, they'd switch to another if it was a late-game situation. That was cool, but now that CBS has expanded it's TV schedule to allow TRU TV, TNT, and TBS to show games, this means that every game is going to be shown in it's entirety on one of those networks. And obviously, the viewer can switch as they like.
I think the games are shown live streaming on ncaa.com, and full replays are available as well.
So not only is this a great tournament, but it's handled pretty well in terms of TV broadcast schedule.

I agree that the name First Four makes sense, and fits.
I just with it would make more sense logically, in why those teams play there.
I don't mind the tournament expanding. To me, it's not so much whether these teams can beat a # 1, but I just like having an extra set of games. Because, like with all sports, not every day is a great day of action. So expanding a little bit, just gives more opportunity for another good game or two.
Question: How many times has a 15 beaten a 2, 14 beaten a 3, or 13 beaten a 4? I read somewhere that 12 beats 5 a lot.

Yeah, I like the expanded TV coverage.
I was in Florida for the start of it in 2010, and remember thinking how weird it was that not every game was televised. (I was with college hoops fans, so that's what we did Thursday night and Friday morning two years ago).

This article should answer those questions.
A 15 hasn't beaten a 2 since 2001...when Hampton beat Iowa State. I think it's happened 3 times before that.
• 8 versus 9: All you need to know is that No. 9 seeds actually hold a 57-51 advantage, and that neither seed has swept the four meetings in a tournament in 10 years. A true toss-up, historically.
• 7 versus 10: No. 7s have won 65 of 108 meetings (60 percent), and only twice in the past 18 years has either seed won all four meetings (No. 7s in 2007, No. 10s in 1999). It's been such a seesaw recently that each seed has taken three of four twice each in the past four tournaments.
• 6 versus 11: No. 6s have won 72 of 108 meetings (67 percent), although No. 11s have won five of eight matchups the past two years. Only once in 27 years have the 11-seeds swept the four games (1989), while the 6-seeds have done so five times, but not since 2004.
• 5 versus 12: No. 5s actually have the same success rate No. 6s do in this round, but it's less likely that either seed will get a clean sweep. While No. 12s have never taken all four meetings in a tournament, they've been shut out only three times (1988, 2000, 2007). Plenty more on 12-seeds later on.
• 4 versus 13: Now the gap gets wider, as No. 4s have won 85 of 108 meetings (79 percent).

You've got some balls nuraman, unlike these ESPN 'experts' who keep keeping #1's and #2's to make the final four.
I don't think Murray will make it that far. Why? It seems whenever mid-major teams are seeded 4 or higher, they do poorly. Last year, San Diego State was a 2 and they lost in the 2nd or 3rd round. Drake was a 5 and lost in the 1st round. BYU was a 3 or 4 last year and lost in the 2nd round. Murray didn't really play anyone tough this year, and they won some close and sloppy games against bad teams. I think they will be overwhelmed by some big conference teams. Make no mistake though, I'm still rooting for them. I think Long Beach State is a team to watch. Their OOC schedule was insanely hard and they won some of those games too. They have an outstanding veteran PG, Casper Ware. I think they are an 11 or 12 seed.
To be fair, 6 isn't exactly a 'high' seed, but Murray got robbed here. They should've gotten a 3 or 4 based on final rankings.
IowaSacKing93
03-14-2012, 04:47 AM
Wow, so Western Kentucky (AKA Middle of Nowhere Landfill University) came back from a 16 point deficit, and BYU came back from 25 down! Talk about setting the bar high on the opening night of the tourney.

Michigan won't get to the final four either. They're maybe the 3rd or 4th or even 5th best team in the big ten. They're young and were lucky in some conference games this year. Ohio STate and Michigan State for example, are much better and have dominating big men inside, Michigan doesn't. I can see them being upset in the first round.

First game of the day is a good one...6 Murray State vs 11 Colorado State. I'll take Murray by 10. It's just tough to judge this team with the lack of SOS they had. I'm excited to see Isaiah Canaan play for the first time. Colo St.'s backcourt could keep this game close.
IowaSacKing93
03-15-2012, 09:22 AM
Colo. St. is playing good. Murray can't even get the ball inside. And Colo. St. just had a nice transition play ending in an open corner 3.
First media timeout. 7-3 Colorado St.

#4 for Colorado State is killing it on the boards. It just seems Colorado State is playing with more of an edge. And Murray isn't even trying to go inside anymore.

Low scoring game at the half, even though both of these teams have a knack for scoring. The first 5 minutes were really slow, both teams were trying to feel the other out, especially Murray. Then Colo St. went through a scoring drought midway through the half.
Colo St. had the momentum for maybe the first 5 minutes, then Murray had it, and I feel that Colo St. took it back near the end of the half, regaining the lead. But really, as close as you can get overall. 24-23 Colo St
IowaSacKing93
03-15-2012, 10:27 AM
Murray with more energy to begin the half. Colorado State can't even hang on to the ball..sloppy play. But these Jimmer-range 3's aren't helping Murray, 28-24.
IowaSacKing93
03-15-2012, 10:28 AM
Another thing we didn't really see in the 1st half were FT's. Murray has been more aggressive this half, finally going inside and now getting to the line.
IowaSacKing93
03-15-2012, 10:33 AM
Murray is just hitting the 50/50 jump shots now..they weren't in the 1st half. Colorado State is also racking up fouls, something that could be an advantage for Murray down the stretch.
Canaan just airballed a 3 LOL. They're sucking with these long transition 3's. Poole should be back in the game soon.

Murray State finally playing at the tempo they want...CSU needs to slow it down, but now they're down by 8. They were hitting the 3 in the first half, now they're just trying to go inside and failing miserably with bad passes and bobbled passes. 34-26

Hornung collecting more offensive rebounds..Colorado state within 9. Still a glimmer of hope for them.
IowaSacKing93
03-15-2012, 11:02 AM
Colo St. is just forcing shots and passes that aren't there. Plus, Murray is more athletic, it's showing on both ends now. 45-34 and FT's coming for Murray.

They have a ton of depth but a player like Melo isn't replacable. There's going to be some tight games if they get down to the elite 8 or final four and they'll need him in there to grab offensive rebounds, block, and just be a force inside etc...I don't see another legitimate center they can have play big minutes. So I'll say that there chances of winning are severely hurt and it's clear that they're the least likely to win of the four 1 seeds, but i still like the zone, and the depth, and their ability to go on those short runs and win games late. Gotta stick with Cuse.

Great posts, IowaSacKing93 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?9-IowaSacKing93), and PackfanMatt_12 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?7-PackfanMatt_12). Keep it up. Good thread.
Sometimes during day games like the MLB playoffs or March Madness, I'll listen to streaming audio at work and then follow your play-by-plays in this thread. So don't be discouraged if there's not a lot of responses, I'm sure some others are reading too.
It's nice to see your takes on how the games are going, and get a sense of what is happening.
PackfanMatt_12 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?7-PackfanMatt_12), how do you post from school? Your phone? You have time during 15 minute breaks or lunch?

The path is clear for VCU and Murray State. :)

this has never happened before...two 2 seeds getting upset in the first round, in the same year...the odds of this happening were probably like 1 million to 1 (no joke) and not only that, this hadn't happened in 11 years! Wow.

Saint Louis and Michigan State coming down to the wire. 55-51 MSU with 2 minutes to go.
MSU has led by 7-11 points for the majority of the half but give SL credit for staying in the game despite shooting in the low 30's.

What do you think of North Carolina State? (My brother-in-law is an alumni of there and roots for them. He respects Coach K, but hates Duke)

They were a bubble team, on the outside, before the tourney. Then they got hot in the ACC Tournament and knocked off North Carolina.
Every year there's a big conference team that sneaks into the tourney that people like to go deep (just because they're 'hot' entering the tournament) and this year that team is NC State.
But this isn't just some sucky team that got lucky. They actually have a lot of talent. CJ Leslie, for example, should be a good NBA player at some point.
At this point, they'll be severe underdogs no matter who they play so it's only natural that I root for them :) especially against Kansas.

Watched the NC State - Kansas game. I didn't think NC State would rally when they were down 8 late in the 2nd half, but they got it to 1 point. But then Kansas kept making the right play. When Kansas missed a FT, NC State tipped the rebound out of bounds.
NC State then threw a crosscourt pass for a 3-pointer, in which the recipient jumped backwards to catch it, and ended up slightly out of bounds.
Then, for the potential 3-point shot at the end, they airballed it.

Also, there was a game last Sunday or Saturday in which a player hit 9 3-pointers. I don't think that means too much though, it was just one game IMO. I don't think that player was that good of a draft prospect, and this should maybe get him a training camp invite or something, if he declares, but not much more.
But, since I can't remember the name, I might be wrong about this, lol. Maybe it's just someone I hadn't been paying enough attention to.

What's the Bonus and Double Bonus system?
After 7 fouls in a half, the team enters the 'bonus'...meaning if a player gets fouled (on a non-shooting play) he gets a one-and-one (1 FT, if he makes it, he gets a 2nd, if he misses that 1st then either team can rebound and no 2nd FT). After 10 fouls (I think its 10 anyway) you enter the double bonus where the players gets 2 FT's no matter what. Neat little system.

Why do you like it? It's an extra minutia to keep track of.

PackfanMatt_12 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?7-PackfanMatt_12) has secured his spot as NCAA Predictions Game champion.
If UNC wins, he will have two teams in the Final Four, to IowaSacKing93 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?9-IowaSacKing93)'s one. If UNC doesn't win, he still has Kentucky.
PackfanMatt_12 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?7-PackfanMatt_12), I think you filled out a bracket on ESPN, right? How many games did it say you got right so far? You too IowaSacKing93 (http://kingsforum.net/live/member.php?9-IowaSacKing93).
