Kings have announced that Kieth Smart (former Warriors head coach) and Bobby Jackson as their 2 new assistant coaches to go along side Jim Eyan and head coach Paul Westphal.
Bobby J had been a scout the last 2 years.
Hard to dislike either move. Maybe one day Vlade will be open to coaching once his kids are out of school (assuming they stay in the states) and his obligations to International basketball are over. Far as I know, he still has the standing offer from the Kings.
And whatever small chance Webber had, he's totally ruined on NBATV and TNT. lol

Hard to dislike either move.
It's pretty easy actually. I'm indifferent toward Keith Smart. He didn't do much as a head coach, he was just "there". His system wasn't that different than Nelson's. And he had David Lee. Yes he still had a flawed roster, but as I said, I didn't see much tactical coaching from him. During 2009-2010, I had Lionel Hollins in my top three for coach of the year, I was impressed with how he was running his offense with those players. Brooks, the eventual winner, was not in my top three. Brooks was just "there".
Did he deserve to get fired? Maybe, maybe not. He did win more games. But if management likes someone better, than that's their call too. Rick Carlisle getting fired for Larry Brown was a lot more controversial.
(About 1.5 years ago, I once spent about an hour trying to find the picture of Rick Carlisle's press conference when he was fired. It was that memorable to me. I eventually found it. It's not on ESPN anymore. :()
So the assistants are now:
Jim Eyen
Mario Elie
Pete Carril
Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Otis Hughley
Keith Smart
Bobby Jackson
I don't think there is a ton of strategy involved in coaching when it comes to the NBA. It's essentially ego management, having the players listen to you/buy into your system and luck of the draw with talent. Guys that look crappy in one place, say like Scott Brooks, look great in the next, say like Scott Brooks. lol
I think Smart did fine during his time in Warriorland though. He improved their record by 10 wins, dropped the opponent PPG by 7, the opponent FG% by two percent and turned a near 10 rebound deficit per game into 4.

I think there can be, depending on the head coach.
As for Brooks, I didn't think he did much whether he was winning or losing. He just let his players play. He showed a little bit of coaching in the WCF this year, but other than that, over the years, not much.
Sometimes it's also about what lineups are used during the game, and whether they are even good lineups. Dunleavy Sr., for example, often uses his bench players at the beginning of the 4th quarter, for too long, and his teams blow leads. I've seen his teams have 15-18 point leads in the 4th quarter, and him sticking with lineups of Greg Anthony or Mike Taylor, and those teams blowing those leads. Most coaches don't rest their starters for a full 4-5 minutes at the beginning of the 4th quarter.
Other times, a coach can be in love with one player to the extent he plays a less productive player over a more productive player.
So I think bad coaching can involve:
* Bad lineups instead of optimal lineups during certain times of the game
And indifferent coaching can involve just running the same plays throughout the game.
Good coaching can involve running different plays depending on the lineup.
With respect to the Kings coaches the last few years, I don't hate any of them. They got as much as possible out of a flawed roster IMO. Sure there were some odd decisions sometimes, but nothing that persisted for that long.

I'd pay to see Carril do a 360 over P.J. Carlesimo in Toronto.
I'd like to remove the 1-4 flat from Paul Westphal's brain, permanently.

How can we hire managers or anything basketball related? If we can talk $$ with coachs then why cant we with players? Wats Thortons contract issue looking like? Dalembert? As far as the hires I dont think it was good at all. Bobby Jackson really? Bring back Christie to fill the water cups too. Let Bobby be a scout. He loves the community and is a huge peoples person. As far as being a hustle player in the NBA, Jackson did great but id rather have a better proven Ast.Coach for this team. We dont need our coachs to learn something that the players are learning. This team needs to go back to winning and dealing with experience. Stop going for the gamble and cheap $$$. Almost anything we hire cheap doesnt work out.

Because the teams can still make moves with respect to GMs, coaches. It's the players that are "locked out". Hence, nothing can be done with respect to the players.
Thornton: He's a RFA. Hopefully the Kings match if it's a reasonable offer.
Dalembert: UFA.

While Westphal did use it a lot, over the last two years, with more talent on the roster, he doesn't have to use it as much.
Later in the year, he would go to Thornton or Cousins a little more.
Add in Fredette, and there's more talent now to run more plays.

If I'm not mistaken Shareef isn't part of the coaching staff anymore, and is now an assistant GM or some part of the front office.
I like having Bobby Jax as part of the coaching staff. He is another guy like Elie who worked hard to be in the NBA and had the all or nothing attitude. I'm indifferent toward Smart. As Nura stated, he wasn't very hands on at times during games, but he still got 36 wins out of a horrible Warrior's team that had a lot of injuries and no depth.
All in all though, I'm more concerned more with the talent on the court more than who wanders around the side. Guess we won't know that part until 2012.

Keith Smart's wife, Carol, even contributed one of those wins.
