    How do you calculate yards?

At the end of the game, when Atlanta kicked the FG, they were at Seattle's 31.

So why was the FG then for 49 yards, instead of 31 yards?

When I was listening to it on the radio, I thought they had said 37 yards, but that the FG was 49, so either way, I was confused.

they add yardage for where the ball is spotted behind the line of scrimmage and the distance the goal post is from the end zone line

Oh. So if you're at the 1 yard line from the goal, and you kick a FG, you would still be kicking 18-19 yards to the goal post?

Ball is kicked from about 7-8 yards behind the spot of the ball and then there is 10 yards of endzone before the uprights, so whatever the yardage is - add 17-18 to it.

yeah...pretty stupid, but I guess it sounds better than a 1 yard field goal for the win
